Aaron P Champion, otherwise known as A.V. Champ, was born in Stewart County, Tennessee. He enlisted with the 12th Tennessee Cavalry, Company D to serve with the Union at the start of the American Civil War. He had a twin brother who also served.

The 12th Tennessee Cavalry was organized in August of 1863 in Nashville, Tennessee. They had a detachment to scout in Florence, Alabama and then were attached to the District of Nashville, Department of the Cumberland until January of 1864. They had duty on the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad at Pulaski, Tennessee until November of 1864. This is where Private Champion contracted an illness. He died of this disease in Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee on September 15th, 1864.

Aaron P Champion is buried in the Stones River National Cemetery in plot A-218. His headstone reads, "A.V. Champ" which, according to family, was his nickname.
