John P. Carsey was born in 1842 and enlisted in Company D of the 18th Ohio Infantry on September 23, 1861. Carsey and his comrades saw their first big fight at the Battle of Stones River as part of Col. Timothy Stanley's brigade in Gen. James Negley's division. During the late morning of December 31, 1862, Stanley's men fought to beat back the attacks of nine Confederate brigades inthe fields and woods north of the Wilkinson Pike that later became known as the Slaughter Pen.

Private Carsey fell wounded that day and never recovered. He died on March 3, 1863. Like many soldiers buried in hospital cemeteries, John Carsey is listed in theĀ Roll of Honor (No. XI) among the veterans known to be buried in Stones River National Cemetery in one of the nearly 2,500 graves marked as unknown with just a number on a small stone.
