Clifford Howard Capshaw was born on April 17, 1924 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and lived in Coffee, Tennessee. He also reportedly lived in Frostproof, Florida before enlisting. He enlisted at Camp Blanding, Florida and served in the US Army as a Private in the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division during World War II. He and his twin brother, Clifton Capshaw, were underage when they joined the army, having run away from home.

The two left for Europe at the same time, though they served in different units. Both fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Clifford died on October 9, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge after being hit in the throat by a bullet. He died five days before his brother became a prisoner of war, though Clifton survived the war and passed away in 2006.

Clifford was awarded a Purple Heart and is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot P-6257.
