M.R. Butler was born around 1838. He served as a Private in Company K, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry. The 2nd Tennessee Cavalry was organized in July 1862 and served at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee until September 1862 when they retreated to Kentucky until October of the same year. They spent time in West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky before they began their advance to Murfreesboro to fight at the Battle of Stones River. The Cavalry was still stationed in Tennessee when Butler died on March 18, 1863 at 25 years old. He has a masonic symbol on his headstone.

Butler is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot F-2260.
