George W. Bussard (or Buzzard) was born in 1846, in Crawford County, Illinois. Before enlisting, he was a farmer living in New Hebron, Illinois. He was the eldest of five children. 

On February 11, 1865, George enlisted in the 152nd Illinois Infantry, Company H, in Olney, Illinois, as a Private. The 152nd Illinois organized at Camp Butler in Springfield, IL on February 18, 1865, to serve for one year. 

On February 20, the regiment moved to Nashville, Tennessee, then on to Tullahoma, Tennessee. George and his regiment guarded the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. Not long after arriving in Tullahoma, George contracted measles and died on March 23, 1865.

George W. Bussard is laid to rest in Stones River National Cemetery in Plot J-3692.
