William Bucholz was born in Germany but immigrated to Waterford, Wisconsin with his family at a young age.

On September 5th, 1861, Bucholz mustered into the Union army in Company C of the 1st Wisconsin Infantry. He served as a private for the duration of his service.

The 1st Wisconsin fought in the battle of Perryville and the Battle of Stones River before they were given duty in Mufreesboro until June of 1863. Throughout all of this, Private Bucholz survived the battles, but fell ill while stationed in Murfreesboro after the Battle of Stones River. He succumbed to his illness on June 14, 1863.

William Bucholz is laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery in plot E-2150.
