Smith Brown served as a Fifth Sergeant in the Fifth Indiana Battery during the Civil War. The Fifth Indiana Battery was recruited from Allen, Noble, Whitley, Marshall, and Laporte counties and was mustered in on September 20, 1861. Brown's and the Fifth Indiana's service in 1862 carried them through Kentucky, middle Tennessee, and northern Alabama. Brown died on April 16, 1862 while in Murfreesboro. 

His headstone reads: “INDIANA VOLUNTEER. HEADSTONE--FAREWELL FOR A TIME, DEAR WIFE AND CHILD, MY LIFE FOR MY COUNTRY, I HAVE GIVEN, I TRUST WE GREET EACH OTHER AGAIN ON THE BEAUTIFUL PLAINS OF HEAVEN.” Brown is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot D-1419.
