James H. Andes was born on February 25, 1842. He enlisted on October 16, 1862 for the army and was mustered in on January 26, 1863. He served as a Sergeant in Company K, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry. He died of typhoid fever on January 29, 1863 at the City Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at 20 years old. He was the son of John and Litty Andes. One of his older siblings, John W. Andes, also served in Company K, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry as a Captain and survived the war. James is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot D-1713.
