Amasa Tracy earned the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Cedar Creek. Though wounded, he commanded several regiments during the afternoon counterattack.

Amasa Tracy served in the Civil War with the 2nd Vermont Infantry as their Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864. During the battle he took command of the 2nd brigade, 2nd division of the 6th Corps when Brigadier General Lewis A. Grant had to take over 2nd division of the 6th Corps. He received the Medal of Honor for taking command of the brigade and attacking enemy works.
