Alvin was born and lived in Appleton, Maine until enlisting with the 4th Maine Infantry in September of 1861. He was detailed to the Rhode Island 1st Light Artillery Battalion E, with whom he served during the battle of Gettysburg. Alvin was captured on July 2, 1863 and dies July 10, 1863.
