Adam Gaskins was appointed first keeper of the first Cape Hatteras Lighthouse by President Thomas Jefferson in 1802. 

While little is known of Gaskin’s life prior to and during his tenure at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, records indicate he was a veteran of the American Revolution and had significant maritime experience by 1773. 

Gaskins began his service at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1803, at an annual salary of $333.33.
