Woleai
Woleai, Caroline Islands, Federated States of Micronesia (September 1945). The U.S. Pacific Fleet Task Force plans the evacuation of the Japanese garrison on Woleai. A Woleaian Islander, U.S. Marine Corps major and Japanese officer demonstrate the subtleties of wartime encounters. Sporting traditional and Japanese-era tattoos, hornrim glasses and loincloth, the Islander gives information to the Marine intelligence officer as the defeated Japanese officer stands to the back.
