DIGEST This section reviews the outdoor recreation patterns and activities identified and measured by ORRRC, and considers their implications for the National Park System. Patterns and activities include passive outdoor pursuits like sightseeing and walking; backwoods recreation, including camping and hiking; water sports; winter sports; and physically active recreation of youth, including games and sports, horseback riding and bicycling. A study of ORRRC's survey of the four occasions for outdoor recreation activities also throws light on public use of the National Park System. These occasions are a vacation, a trip, a day's outing, and a short occasion of two or three hours duration.
