B. National Historic Sites in Non-Federal Ownership

A few national historic sites in non-Federal ownership are located throughout the United States. These are not units of the National Park System but, as authorized by the Historic Sites Act of 1935, are administered by the owners under the provisions of cooperative agreements with the Department of the Interior. The owners agree to maintain the property in a manner consistent with good preservation practices, for which purpose they may receive assistance from the National Park Service as provided in the agreements. The Park Service provides bronze plaques for the sites. The following site illustrates the phases of history treated in this volume.

1. Chicago Portage National Historic Site, Ill.
