De Soto's discovery of the
Mississippi, in 1541, is romantically portrayed in this 19th-century
painting by William H. Powell, which hangs in the rotunda of the U.S.
Capitol. Though historically inaccurate, it symbolizes the courage and
daring of the European explorers, who probed a new continent.
