A. Sites in the National Park System

The principal aim of the National Survey of Historic Sites and Buildings is to identify nationally important historic sites that are not units of the National Park System, but no survey of historic sites would be complete without mention of historic areas in the Park System. The sites described below are those areas administered by the National Park Service that have primary or secondary associations with 18th-century English colonial development and the War for Independence. Park Service units are not included that are of a purely memorial character, such as Statue of Liberty National Monument, N.Y., and Thomas Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument in the District of Columbia. Further information about each area described below may be obtained by writing directly to the superintendent.

Since the initial publication of this document (1961), five sites eligible for National Historic Landmark designation have now been added to the National Park System; these sites have been added to this list. Three additional sites which were under non-Federal ownership have since been acquired by the Federal government and are now included in this list.
