Historic Events

1820Maj. Stephen H. Long, commanding an exploring party sent out by President Madison in 1819, first sighted Longs Peak.
1843Rufus B. Sage, another explorer, visited the area.
1859Joel Estes, the first white settler, entered park, building first cabin a year later.
1868First ascent of Longs Peak by William N. Byers, Maj. J. W. Powell, and five other men. Rocky Mountain Jim, adventurer and frontiersman, settled in area.
1869Earl of Dunraven, famous English sportsman, first visited this area.
1871-73The Hayden Geographical Survey, under Dr. E. V. Hayden, worked here. First pictures this section of Rockies taken by pioneer photographer, W. H. Jackson.
1874First stage between Longmont and Estes Park established. Albert Bierstadt, famous artist, first visited region.
1875Abner Sprague, northern Colorado pioneer, settled in Moraine Park.
1878First hotel built by Earl of Dunraven.
1888Enos A. Mills, pioneer of nature-guiding idea, settled at east base of Longs Peak.
1907-09Automobile stage lines established Estes Park to Loveland and Lyons.
1915Rocky Mountain National Park established.
1920 Fall River Road over Continental Divide completed.
192 Bear Lake Road completed.
1932Trail Ridge Road opened.
