The men of Wilkes and Surry counties rode beside the Yadkin River on routes that, at least in some places, no longer exist. In 1960 construction began on the dam that would create this reservoir, which covers some of the historic traces believed to have been the route of the Patriot militia in 1780.

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir features 11 miles of certified OVNHT. They are primarily mountain biking trails but pedestrians are welcome. The Visitor Center features an exhibit on the history of the OVNHT. There are over 30 miles of total trail available for use, along with opportunities to fish, boat, swim, and camp.

There are several picnic areas for public use and restrooms are available in the visitor center.

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is open year round, 8am-4:30pm. There are multiple parking areas available.
