October 4, 1780. As the Patriot militias descended towards Gilbert Town, they were sure of catching Patrick Ferguson there and having their long-awaited battle. The commanders gathered their men, made encouraging speeches, and gave one last chance for anyone to leave who couldn't stomach the fight; not a single soldier turned away. They shortly learned however, that Ferguson had already fled and Gilbert Town had been abandoned. This trail is part of the Thermal Belt Rail Trail, extending apx. 8 miles along old railroad beds. This trail segment is apx. 0.75 miles long with no designated parking area. Public parking is available at the southern end of the trail at a gas station. The northern end of this segment is where the trail crosses Rock Road. The trail is a wide paved path, suitable for bicycles and strollers. The only facilities or amenities are at the gas station where the trail meets highway 64. |
