Lake Whelchel didn’t exist in 1780, but the Overmountain Men rode along the creek and river that were used to create the lake. As you walk along the trail, put yourself in the mindset of those men who were so far from home, pushing forward in the dark and the rain, so close to their goal in the pursuit of justice and independence.

There are 7.5 miles of trail available to walk along the edge of the lake, including several miles of certified OVNHT. The loop around the lake provides an alternate route of the OVNHT. The trail can be taken in either direction just outside of the gated parking lot at the boat launch, or from another trail head parking area off Concord Road. Fishing and boating are allowed on the lake; proper licenses are required.

There are restrooms and picnic tables available, as well as a covered pavilion that is available to rent.
The lake and trail are open from 8am-8pm March 1-August 31, and 8am-5pm September-February 28.
