The NPS uses a wide variety of planning tools to achieve its mandate of preserving resources unimpaired for future generations. The Wilderness Stewardship Division (WSD) assists parks and programs in integrating wilderness character into planning processes and documents, including Wilderness Stewardship Plans, General Management Plans, and resource-specific plans (fire management, climbing management, interpretation, etc.).

The WSD partners with the NPS Planning Program and NPS Denver Service Center Planning Division, whose expertise in planning and compliance ensures that parks are adequately addressing wilderness character in planning efforts.
