Historic Structure Collections

Historic Structure Reports provide history, documentation, and treatment recommendations for NPS historic structures. These resources are available through the Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) Portal, the NPS-wide repository for documents, publications, and data sets related to natural and cultural resources of the National Park Service.

• The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring, & Reconstructing Historic Buildings (Revised, 2017)

Professional standards and guidance from the Secretary of the Interior that are intended to be applied to a variety of historic resource types, including structures. The Standards address the four treatments: preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction.

A series of publications from Technical Preservation Services that provide guidance on preserving, rehabilitating, and restoring historic buildings.

• Mission 66 Visitor Centers: The History of a Building Type

This publication by Sarah Allaback provides an in-depth history of the visitor center, a building type that was at the heart of Mission 66 planning efforts. The new, centralized facilities featured modern architectural design and a broad program of visitor services, park interpretation, and park administration functions.

• Electronic Technical Information Center (eTIC)

The Electronic Technical Information Center (eTIC) collection consists of planning and construction documents created by or for the National Park Service, as well as publications on cultural and natural resources.
