Backcountry

Backcountry potable water, human waste disposal, and food service operations will be operated in accordance with applicable Public Health laws, regulations, guidelines and NPS policies to reduce the risk of waterborne, foodborne and vector-borne diseases in parks. Information on National Park Service backcountry operations can be found in Reference Manual 83A-5. To better assist commerical river operators, the Office of Public Health developed a Norovirus Reference Document to prevent and respond to an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness while on the river. This information may be useful for additional backcountry trips and activities. Please explore the printable Backcountry Guide Card for helpful reminders on safe food storage, handling, prep and service.
