The Civil War Era National Cemeteries Discover Our Shared Heritage travel itinerary was produced by the National Park Service Heritage Education Services and Federal Preservation Institute, in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs Historic Preservation Office and National Cemetery Administration History Program, the National Preservation Institute, and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers. The Civil War Era National Cemeteries travel itinerary is based primarily on registration information on historic places in the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks collections. These archives are kept at 1201 Eye Street NW, Washington, DC and are open to the public.

Kathleen Schamel, Department of Veterans Affairs Federal Preservation Officer, created the idea for the travel itinerary with the assistance of Doug Pulak, Deputy Federal Preservation Officer. Sara Amy Leach, Senior Historian, and Jennifer Perunko and Alec Bennett, National Cemetery Administration historians, provided valuable assistance with research and reviewing text, including editing and fact checking draft entries. The itinerary was funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs Historic Preservation Office through a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service and the National Preservation Institute. Constance W. Ramirez, Director, and John Sprinkle, Deputy Director, of the National Park Service's Federal Preservation Institute and Jere Gibber, Executive Director, of the National Preservation Institute coordinated the cooperative agreement.

Carol Shull, Interim Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places and Chief, Heritage Education Services, National Park Service managed production and edited the itinerary.  Dr. Drew Gilpin Faust, president of Harvard University, wrote the essay "Death and Dying." Sara Amy Leach, National Cemetery Administration Senior Historian, wrote the essay "Designing the First National Cemeteries." Kelly Merrifield, contractor with the National Preservation Institute, wrote "From Necessity to Honor: The Evolution of National Cemeteries in the United States" and other sections of the itinerary, and selected the photographs. Justin Kockritz and Jason Vaughan, contractors with the National Preservation Institute, wrote the site descriptions. The National Cemetery Administration History Program provided many of the images.

Hyejung Kwon designed the original computer template for the itineraries as the practicum for her Masters of Tourism Administration (MTA) at The George Washington University’s School of Business, Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management.   Kathryn Warnes, contractor with the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers, has adjusted the template. Kelly Merrifield programmed the itinerary into the template. Amber Dumler, National Park Service Park Museum Program, assisted with the programming of the itinerary. Emma Byrnes and Adam Rubin, graduate students in the George Washington University Historic Preservation Program, Thomas Hardej, graduate student in the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at the University of Maryland, Zachary Lifton, a graduate of the Historic Preservation Program at Columbia University, as interns for the National Park Service Heritage Education Services also assisted in the preparation of the itinerary. Christine Messing and Stephanie Massaro with the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places assisted with the National Register nomination research. Jeff Joeckel of the National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks staff provided very valuable advice and assistance in the development of the itinerary. James Rosenthal and Jett Lowe from the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey and Historic American Engineering Record took the Historic American Buildings Survey photographs used in the itinerary.

The itinerary was produced with the support of the National Park Service's Stephanie Toothman, Associate Director for Cultural Resources and Science; Jon Smith, Assistant Associate Director for Heritage Preservation Services; Bryan Mitchell, Chief, Heritage Preservation Services; Paul Loether, Chief, National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks; and Richard O’Connor, Chief, Historical Documentation Programs.
