Transcript concerning Clara Barton:
“Washington is full of earnest women whose lives have been devoted to noble work. That sort of thing is rather in fashion!..Such a woman is Clara Barton, president of the International Red Cross Society, with whom I had the honor of talking for a couple of hours the other day. Her manner is charming, a vein of quaint humor running through her earnestness, and sparkling in delightful contrast to the tremendous seriousness of the work to which she has given herself. Miss Barton told me of her early experiences on our battlefields when she got her first insight into the horrors of war, an insight which cost her several years of health.”
