In November 1861, Zollicoffer moved his troops to a defensive position in Mill Springs, Kentucky, on the south bank of the Cumberland River. From his winter encampment, he kept an eye on the Federal forces concentrating in the communities of Somerset and Lebanon. The Cumberland River offered access to the interior farmland of Kentucky and served as both a supply route and a natural barrier, making it an ideal strategic location for their winter stay. Zollicoffer immediately ordered the construction of earthworks and trenches to further protect his position at Mill Springs. During this time, Zollicoffer reportedly used two nearby houses as temporary headquarters during the winter: the modest West-Metcalfe House, located approximately a mile away from Mill Springs, and the Brown-Lanier House located near the Mill Springs grist mill. |
