The Wayside - Siege of Boston, 1775-1776

During the winter of 1775-76, the army commanded by General George Washington's, headquartered at and near Harvard College in Cambridge, had the British bottled up in Boston. The college was forced to move to Concord; Professor and Mrs. John Winthrop moved into Whitney's house. Professor Winthrop was one of colonial America's leading scientists, specializing in astronomy. Many of his observations were published by the British Royal Society, of which he was a Fellow (as was another prominent colonial American scientist, Benjamin Franklin).
