Youth & Young Adult Programs

Transcript

Hi, I'm Alan Saperstein. I've been a National Park Ranger for over 30 years. My current position is that of the physical security specialist of the Northeast region of the National Park Service. In this role, I work with individual parks in the region to secure our nation's treasures through the use of countermeasures, such as alarm systems, video cameras, staff procedures, and design of the site. All this is a formal way to say I protect people from people and the resource from people.

I said before that my current position is that of physical security specialists, but really, I've worn many hats and done many cool things in the National Park Service. I'm a commissioned law enforcement officer. I've been a firefighter on several wildfires. I've done natural resource work, like controlling exotic species at San Antonio Missions or help saving beached whales and protected species at Cape Cod National Seashore. I've done cultural resource work like securing our nation's icon parks like the statue of liberty and Independence National Historical Park. I've traveled all over the country as part of my job and visited many National Park sites and worked with thousands of great people.

I came to this career because of my love of the outdoors, and that love can be tied directly back to my time in scouting. I learned a lot of values that I still aspire to today, so I decided long ago, I wanted to take what I loved from my childhood and see if I can make a career out of it. So here I am. I'm a grown-up scout, if you will I'm a ranger in the National Park Service, 30 years and counting, and I still love my job. If you want to do this, if you love the things that you do in scouting, consider a career in the National Park Service.
