Welcome to Tour Stop 5: Confederate Field Hospital.
During the battle, a small log cabin located here served as the main Confederate field hospital. Field hospitals were the first place that an injured soldier would receive treatment during a battle.
Often set up in nearby homes, businesses and even churches, field hospitals were rudimentary with doctors and surgeons using whatever they could to supplement their meager supplies. They tried to help as many of the injured men as possible while more were being evacuated to the site from the battle.
This resulted in injured men that were often left laying outside waiting to be seen.
This is most likely the scene at this field hospital before it was captured by Federal forces after the Confederate retreat. A few of the foundation stones at the small log cabin where the hospital was centered are still visible.
To reach the next door stop, continue south down KY-235 for three-quarters of a mile to Tour Stop 5 located on your left.
Description
Located at Tour Stop #4 is the Confederate field hospital where wounded were carried during the morning battle. When the Confederate lines collapsed and were routed, the surgeons and wounded were left at this location, becoming prisoners of war (POWs). The surgeons were allowed to continue working on their wounded under an oath to not leave their posts.
