One of the expressions was, you’ve got to bring credit to the race. And "credit to the race" means you do something outstanding so that you'd be recognized, and people would realize how stupid segregation was.

Dr. Roscoe Brown Jr. (1922-2016) was a squadron commander among the Tuskegee Airmen. He earned his doctorate after Army service and became a professor, radio show host, university director and president.
