Rebecca Hunt-Foster - Paleontologist
Transcript
Hi, I'm ReBecca Hunt-Foster, paleontologist at Dinosaur National Monument, and today I'm in our museum collections. This is a dinosaur that's only ever been found in Dinosaur National Monument. This is a sauropod or a long-necked dinosaur called Abydosaurus mcintoshi. And this dinosaur is not found in the historic Carnegie Quarry, this one was actually found in rocks that are just a little bit younger and outside of the Quarry.
So when I was a scout growing up in Oklahoma, I really liked to be outdoors and look for rocks and animals and things like that. And that led me to this career in paleontology where I get to work at Dinosaur National Monument and wander around looking for rocks and dead animals like this guy here. This is Allosaurus jimmadseni. And this is another dinosaur that was first found in Dinosaur National Monument.
After we excavate the fossils we bring them back to the museum where they're cleaned and studied. And then we catalog them to put them either on display like these fossils are or to put them in our library of fossils. We have lots of different things in our collections. We have everything from arrowheads to skeletons of modern animals all the way to our dinosaur fossils.
And this is like a library. We keep everything organized and we can look it up in a computer or look it up in a book to find specific types of fossils or animals that we're looking for. One way to work for the National Park Service is to do internships, seasonal positions, or you can apply for full time positions. But whatever you do, make sure that you're following your passion and you're doing what you love. I'm also the troop leader for troop 1793 here in Utah.
And Diplodocus and I hope that you have a great time at the Girl Scout Jamboree.
