The Quiet Park - Eureka

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park

Transcript

[00:05] Hello, my name is Chris Edwards. I’m one of the Park Rangers here at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The park today of course is still closed due to the pandemic situation. But I thought we would give you a sneak peek behind the closed gates just to give you an idea what’s going on, what the park is like, what the views are like right now even though we’re not open yet to the public again.

[00:35] Right now we’re on the ferryboat Eureka. You can see all these seats here for the passengers. And out the windows there is the full-rigged ship Balclutha. It’s a cargo ship from 1886, sailing vessel that had to go around Cape Horn.

[00:53] What I’d thought we’d do is head out that door right there up to the hurricane deck and give you a full look around the San Francisco Bay Area, give you an idea of the sights and sounds. So here we go.

[01:11] Here’s a more clear view of the Balclutha. The red one there is our steam ocean tugboat Hercules, built in 1907. The island there with the buildings on it, that is Alcatraz, the infamous Alcatraz. And up the ladder here to the hurricane deck. And in fact I think what we’ll do is we’ll go up this little three-step ladder here, up on top of the dome deck. It’s a great place to get completely up and free of all structure and get a look around.

[01:47] There’s the Bay Bridge, going over to Oakland. To the right here, there’s Ghirardelli Square with the red brick. This is Aquatic Park Cove, the core of the National Park here. And there’s the very famous Golden Gate Bridge behind the Balclutha, some fog sneaking over the hills, and over towards the East Bay with some modern-day container ship entering port there.

[02:15] So there’s a look around of the Bay.
