TRANSCRIPT: Do you sincerely think (no offense meant) that painting is a practical means of propaganda in this day of tons of newspulp, thousands of miles of celluloid film strips, and billions of radio waves? It need not even be argued that people can read today and have no further need of picture books. It seems to me that painting as propaganda is very small fry. Even if it weren’t, propaganda must work now, and painting works over a long period if at all. It’s the long-time view. The artist must feel how his work will be regarded after a few decades have passed.
