Sophie Schell - Volunteer Scout
Transcript
Hi there. My name is Sophie Schell. And I'm an Eagle Scout from Washington DC. My love for the national parks started in fourth grade when I walked into the Badlands National Park with my family, my Every Kid in a Park pass in hand. Since then, I visited countless national parks, including Yellowstone, Dry Tortugas, and Arches.
National parks are more than just beautiful landscapes and scenic views, they're a way to connect with nature, learn about history, and experience adventure. As a sixth grader my love for the outdoors drove me to join Scouts BSA. I quickly found that the feeling of connection to nature in a world that I felt when exploring national parks was similar to the way I felt exploring with my friends in Scouting.
In eighth grade when it came time to pick an Eagle Scout project, I knew that I wanted to have a large impact on the community that had given so much to me. Because of my prior experiences, I decided to work with the National Park Service, National Capital Parks-East to adopt and revitalize the local trail. Walking around the weekend of my project watching the eight-year-olds painting blazes on trees and our older volunteers sinking signposts, I felt connected to each and every Eagle Scout that came before me.
As I look to the future I'm excited about all the national parks yet to visit, and hope to inspire the young people who come after me to look for opportunities to do something with there scouting experience that benefits national parks. Thank you.
