Fifth Window Landing: Fire Island Lighthouse Self Guided Tower Tour
Transcript
The stones from the original lighthouse make up the terrace of the keepers quarters, now the Lighthouse Museum. Behind the lens building is the base of the original lighthouse which may be viewed from the boardwalk in front of and within the Fresnel Lens Building. It is also the approximate location of the western end of Fire Island when the first lighthouse was erected in 1826. Since then “littoral drift,” the natural transportation of sand from wind and wave action, has deposited 5.5 miles of beach to our west creating Robert Moses State Park. The growth of Fire Island is a perfect example of barrier beach’s dynamic geological change and continuity.
