Juneteenth 2021

African Burial Ground National Monument

Description

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the US. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Maj. Gen. Granger, landed in Texas with news that the Civil War had ended. General Order No. 3 stated, “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” This virtual celebration includes a libation, flowers at the reinterment area, singing, and a discussion about the importance of Juneteenth.
