Transcript

Hi, my name's Brekyn. I work at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area for the National Park Service in Eastern Washington, and my job is called supervisory park ranger of interpretation. So I interpret the resource or educate people on the natural, cultural, or historical sites of the park. I love my job because of the people. I love connecting them with the park and bringing the park to them and helping them fall in love with their national park site.

What was your pathways into the National Park Service?

Well, I had no clue what I was doing in college, and I saw all my friends were doing summer internships. So I researched online for summer internships that involve conservation or being outside, and I stumbled across an organization called Student Conservation Association, also known as SCA, and I applied there. And I got a summer internship at a national park in North Dakota called Theodore Roosevelt. And I learned all about being a park ranger and that there's different kinds of park rangers, not just law enforcement.

There's interpretive rangers like me. There's resource rangers that are like biologists. And there is also fire rangers. And I just fell in love with the job. And I had people that really took me in under their wing and helped me apply and become a ranger today.
