Description

Sergeant William Carney was a freedom seeker who escaped slavery and made a new life for himself in New Bedford, MA. He enlisted in Company C. of the 54th MA Regiment, and would later become the first African American man to win the Medal of Honor for his actions at Fort Wagner during the Civil War.
