Welcome to Tour Stop #5: Timmy's Branch.

Just before dawn on January 19th 1862, Confederate forces collided with Federals near a small creek named Timmy's branch.

Where you are now located is the site of the first shots fired in the Battle of Mill Springs. Exchanged by Federal First Kentucky Cavalry
and the Confederate Cavalry advance.

Motivated by the sound of gunfire, the U.S. campus came to life, and were quickly mustered to begin marching south to meet the advancing Confederates.

To reach Tour Stop #6, continue south on KY-235 for about four miles. Watch for directional signs, and turn right onto Old Mill Springs Road.
Travel two miles on Old Mill Springs Road until you reach Tour Stop #6 located on your right.

 

Description

The small creek here known locally as Timmy's Branch was where the first shots of the Battle of Mill Springs were fired by between US and Confederate cavalry forces. Cavalry was used for a variety of important missions in Civil War armies including watching for enemy approaches.

At dawn on January 19, 1862, advanced cavalry pickets from the First Kentucky Cavalry US called out to an approaching cavalry force to halt and state the countersign. Firing erupted and the Battle of Mill Springs had begun.
