Mesophotic coral reef ecosystems in preserving coastal resources in American Samoa

Connected Conservation

Description

The National Park of American Samoa is a remote park distributed on four volcanic islands in the South Pacific Ocean. One of the park's most astonishing resources is its 2,550 acres of coral reefs that contain 250 different coral species. Unfortunately, El Nino-induced heat waves have led to widespread coral bleaching and coral death in the park; rising ocean temperatures is a main threat to its coral ecosystems.
