Natalie Mast - Volunteer
Transcript
Hi, my name is Natalie Mast and I am a volunteer at George Washington Carver National Monument. I have been wearing my volunteer patch now for about seven years. My typical duties are; giving school tours and I also do special events. And our theme is discovery. And this is the perfect theme for this park. It is truly a hidden gem and there's so much to discover, it's both naturalistic and historic.
So we have forests and prairies on the property as well as historic buildings and landmarks. Some things that I have discovered about myself were that I still have so many gifts and talents. I was diagnosed at 34 with a disabling illness, and I thought that was the end. But the volunteering here at the park has helped me to discover a new purpose in life and more about myself. And it also helped me to discover that I still have something to give back.
So things I discovered as a volunteer but not as a visitor were more about George himself and all of the gifts and talents that he had too. What I want people to know is that from our youngest junior rangers to the oldest retirees, able-bodied or disabled, introvert or extrovert, there's a place in volunteering in parks for everybody.
