Bumble bee queen digging a burrow

Description

A common eastern bumble bee queen, <i>Bombus impatiens</i>, digging a burrow in which to spend the winter. Queen bumble bees live for one year and they are the only members of the colony who survive through the winter. The males and workers die in late summer or fall.
