Tour Stop #3: Last Stand Hill

Welcome to Stop 3: Last Stand Hill. This hilltop was where the Confederate 17th, 28th, 29th Tennessee and the 16th Alabama Infantry Regiments attempted to hold back the advancing Federal army at the end of the battle.
This is also where Confederate artillery attempted to hold back the advancing Federals in a last stand, allowing the other Confederate units to retreat. Hence its name: Last Stand Hill.
These guns were only able to fire a few shots due to fear of hitting their own men.
Looking back towards up to to the north, this point allows a good view of the field from the Confederate perspective, including the ravine, visible on your right, used by the 15th Mississippi and 20th Tennessee Regiments to attack the Federal line during the climax of the battle.
To proceed with your tour, continue south down KY 235, proceeding one-quarter mile to Tour Stop 4 located on your right.
Description
This tour stop is the location where Confederate soldiers attempted to stop the pursuing US forces to by time for the retreating Confederate army. The last stand failed and the orderly Confederate withdrawal turned into a rout back to their entrenchments at Beech Grove.
