00:00:50:20 --:--:--:-- include local community groups, nonprofits,

00:00:53:21 --:--:--:-- tribes, and local governments.

00:00:58:23 --:--:--:-- anywhere from a few months to a couple of years.

00:01:13:21 --:--:--:-- the Compton Junior Posse has evolved

00:01:16:21 00:01:21:20 into a self-development leadership program.

00:01:23:20 --:--:--:-- The trail has been underutilized,

00:01:26:06 --:--:--:-- an eyesore because it was used for a dumping grounds.

00:01:29:16 --:--:--:-- The National Park Service has been instrumental

00:01:32:11 --:--:--:-- in trying to communicate with the city

00:01:35:01 --:--:--:-- to help us improve those trails.

00:01:37:02 --:--:--:-- - The trail needs to be re-graded and resurfaced.

00:01:40:17 --:--:--:-- And we need safer road crossings.

00:01:44:16 --:--:--:-- I looked at examples from the area

00:01:47:05 --:--:--:-- of trails that have been designed for equestrian uses

00:01:50:20 --:--:--:-- in urban areas and have been working with Mayisha

00:01:53:05 --:--:--:-- and with the city to talk about

00:01:55:03 --:--:--:-- implementation for these changes.

00:01:57:23 00:02:01:21 - The trail should actually be the focus of the community.

00:02:08:04 --:--:--:-- - The Harlem River Greenway project is a project

00:02:11:15 --:--:--:-- to connect communities by creating a linear park greenway

00:02:16:23 --:--:--:-- along the Harlem River waterfront.

00:02:19:08 --:--:--:-- - The High Bridge is one central point,

00:02:22:02 --:--:--:-- and Roberto Clemente State Park is another central point.

00:02:25:09 --:--:--:-- And all up and down the river,

00:02:27:06 --:--:--:-- there will be more and more public access

00:02:29:05 --:--:--:-- and more and more recreation.

00:02:31:23 --:--:--:-- - It's important for people to be able to use the resources

00:02:34:17 --:--:--:-- in their community.

00:02:36:14 --:--:--:-- - When we contacted National Parks and we expressed interest,

00:02:39:11 --:--:--:-- Jerry actually reached out to us and helped guide us

00:02:42:17 --:--:--:-- through the process, gave us support, gave us ideas.

00:02:46:16 --:--:--:-- - The idea that people shouldn't have to go someplace else

00:02:51:04 --:--:--:-- to be healthy, to get their daily dose of physical activity,

00:02:56:07 --:--:--:-- that it's available within 10 blocks

00:02:58:21 00:03:02:14 of where they live is so important.

00:03:18:06 --:--:--:-- - With this attention that's being brought to the Greenway,

00:03:21:02 00:03:23:20 we're going to have a better community here.

00:03:29:04 --:--:--:-- - The National Park Service does not fund projects directly,

00:03:32:04 --:--:--:-- but we provide technical expertise

00:03:34:00 --:--:--:-- and help identify funding sources.

00:03:36:10 --:--:--:-- We accept applications for all different types of projects.

00:03:39:06 --:--:--:-- We look for projects where communities already have

00:03:42:02 --:--:--:-- some stakeholders and have an idea

00:03:43:22 --:--:--:-- but aren't sure about where to take it next.

00:03:47:07 --:--:--:-- - So the vision is to have

00:03:49:03 --:--:--:-- people living within the asphalt quilt

00:03:51:08 --:--:--:-- be able to connect to each other,

00:03:52:18 --:--:--:-- walk throughout their neighborhood,

00:03:54:13 --:--:--:-- and then walk up here to this ultimate wellness center.

00:03:58:05 --:--:--:-- - In the end, we want to be able to provide maps of this location

00:04:02:11 --:--:--:-- and for this neighborhood

00:04:04:00 --:--:--:-- that are safe and walkable right now

00:04:06:23 --:--:--:-- and then to create a prioritized list

00:04:08:22 --:--:--:-- for the city and the county to implement changes

00:04:11:19 --:--:--:-- to make a more walkable community.

00:04:15:22 --:--:--:-- - We want to extend this trail to the east.

00:04:19:00 --:--:--:-- We want to extend it to the west.

00:04:21:00 --:--:--:-- And we're looking forward to Park Service help

00:04:23:08 --:--:--:-- and assistance.

00:04:25:12 --:--:--:-- - Some of the things that appealed to us

00:04:27:01 --:--:--:-- about this project, as the Park Service,

00:04:28:23 --:--:--:-- is that it was a small piece

00:04:30:09 --:--:--:-- of what'll be a large regional vision

00:04:32:08 --:--:--:-- of a network of trails.

00:04:33:09 --:--:--:-- And also the City of Whittier

00:04:35:01 --:--:--:-- had already made a strong commitment to the project.

00:04:38:04 --:--:--:-- - I love coming here.

00:04:39:20 --:--:--:-- I don't know what I'd do without it.
