Fetish Carving — History Behind Southwestern Arts

Grand Canyon National Park

Description

Many Native American traditions recognize a special connection to nature, which includes the integral belief that all things have a spirit.

One such example are Zuni Fetishes, which are palm sized stone carvings, physical representations of animals that hold spiritual importance. Fetishes’ purpose remains the same today as it did in the beginning, to assist humans, the most vulnerable of all the living creatures, in meeting the problems that face them during their lives.
