Malverto Grijalva: A Juicy Homestead Story

Homestead National Historical Park

Description

Little about Malverto Grijalva's tumultuous youth prepared him for the settled life he would build as a homesteader. He immigrated from Spain as a toddler, lived in Mexico, lost his mother, became estranged from his father and then built a career as a charismatic singer in Alta California. Malverto squatted on land claimed by Henry Dalton, an Englishman. He had taken cuttings from the orange trees at the Mission San Gabriel, planting them on his homestead and joined a group of pioneering orange growers.
