Boston National Historical Park

Transcript

Interviewer: How did you end up here in the Yard? Wilder: Well it started with a newspaper picture of a welder They wanted welders at the Raytheon plant in, at, Waltham Mass. and so I thought that would be a good thing for me to do. I thought, really get to a man's work. So I went to Raytheon and got hired, I was made assistant supervisor and I was doing spot welding, which I could have done in an evening gown. [chuckles] Well anyhow, I wanted to, use the dungarees and the Dickies I had bought to be a real welder So I went to the Charlestown Navy Yard and got hired and went to South Boston Navy Yard and went to welding school there and the I was sent back to Charlestown. I enjoyed, getting into the Yard.
