National Parks of New York Harbor Teacher Workshop:
Trace the evolution of citizenship within American history. During this 2 day workshop, teachers investigate the different ideas regarding the rights and responsibilities that people have to each other and to the government. People have been coming to America for hundreds of years - some came in shackles and others in pursuit of the American dream. Through talks with scholars and a visit to the African Burial Ground National Monument, Federal Hall National Memorial, and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, teachers will consider the changing assumptions regarding civic rights from the 17th through the 21st century. This exploration will model the democracy walk teaching technique of site exploration and will provide teachers with curricular materials to support its inclusion in their classroom curricula.
