New Orleans and the Blues

Bruce Barnes and Marc Stone Singing the Blues
The Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival’s project, New Orleans and the Blues, brought together blues musicians and music scholars to present a program of music and discussion centered around the Mississippi Delta Blues. The LMDI-funded events were focused on the history of Lower Mississippi Delta Blues, a topic that until now was never explored as part of the Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival.

The audiences for these events included attendees who came in for the festival from all over the U.S. and several countries abroad. These included tourists who just happened to find out about the events while they were visiting the French Quarter, as well as locals who frequently attend live music events. What they received was a musical education about the history of the blues in New Orleans, a performance demonstration of the evolution of the blues, an in-depth interview with a blues historian, and exposure to some of New Orleans' best blues talent associated with Lower Mississippi Delta Blues.
