Be water wise and enjoy fishing along the Little River.
National Parks offer many fishing opportunities, including here at Little River Canyon National Preserve. With almost 50 species of fish occuring in Little River, fishing at the park is a popular pastime.
Safety Tips
- Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD or lifejacket).
- Watch children carefully - the power of the river can be easily underestimated.
- Use sunscreen and wear sun protection gear.
- Carry a first aid kit and know how to remove fishing hooks.
- Cold water and cold air temperatures can quickly lead to hypothermia.
- Weather conditions can change with little or no-notice - check the forecast before you go. National Weather Service. If you hear thunder, get away from the water and seek shelter.
- Use caution when walking or wading in the water, there may be hidden hazards below the surface of the water that you can't see.
- Assess swift water before entering or crossing.
- Watch out for wildlife whlie fishing - Little River Canyon is home to wildlife such as bears, snakes (including venomous Copperheads, Cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes), and hornets.
- In case of emergency, call 9-1-1. Many areas of the park have poor or no cell reception - carry a back-up signaling device.
- Let a friend know where you will be going and when you expect to be back.
- Pack out what you pack in - please dispose of fishing line and other trash properly.
